Falta records 42.83 per cent voter turnout till 11 AM

Kolkata, May 21 (UNI) Voter turnout in the re-poll at Falta Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas reached 42.83 per cent till 11 am on Thursday, with polling progressing peacefully amid heavy security deployment and no reports of major violence.
The re-poll was ordered by the Election Commission of India (ECI) following numerous complaints during the second phase of the West Bengal elections on April 29. Allegations had surfaced from several parts of Falta claiming that the name and election symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) had allegedly been covered with tape and other materials, triggering widespread controversy. In response, the ECI directed fresh polling at all 285 booths in the Assembly constituency.
A festive atmosphere prevailed across the constituency as voters turned out in large numbers, with many describing the exercise as a celebration of democracy. At Booth No. 252 of Khandalia High School, long queues of voters were seen from the morning hours. Residents said the polling process remained calm, allowing them to cast their votes freely and without intimidation.
