Path Cleared for Caste-Based Census: Minister Chhagan Bhujbal

Mumbai, May 15 (UNI) Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal has announced that the Central Government has paved the way for a caste-based census following persistent demands for a separate enumeration of Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
According to an official communication from the Central Government, a caste-based census will be conducted during the second phase of Census 2027.
Minister Bhujbal pointed out that in Question 12 of the 'House-listing' phase (Phase 1), the social classification options were limited to "Scheduled Castes," "Scheduled Tribes," and "Others." He argued that without a dedicated "OBC" column, accurate and reliable data for the community could not be gathered. Bhujbal had raised this issue through detailed letters sent on March 30 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and on March 27 to union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging for necessary amendments to include an independent OBC category.
