Vigilance Bureau arrests Seed Certification Officer for accepting Rs 50,000 bribe

Chandigarh, Apr 13 (UNI) Continuing its crackdown on corruption within the state, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Monday apprehended a Seed Certification Officer while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000. The accused, identified as Amritpal Singh, was posted at the Punjab State Seed Certification Authority in Ludhiana.
According to an official spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau, the arrest followed a complaint registered by a seed producer based in the Mansa district. The complainant, who operates M/s Punjab Agri Seed Farm, specializes in developing seeds from breeder stocks acquired from various agricultural universities. The firm had reportedly sown wheat seeds across approximately 510 hectares (1275 acres) of land, an area that fell under the inspection jurisdiction of the accused officer.
The complainant alleged that during an inspection visit to the farm about ten days ago, Amritpal Singh demanded a bribe of Rs 200 per hectare, totaling Rs 1.02 lakh, to submit a favorable inspection report for the sown crops. The entire conversation regarding the illegal demand was reportedly recorded by the complainant, who subsequently approached the Vigilance Bureau Range in Bathinda rather than paying the gratification.
