First Lemchan – Mizoram Film Festival begins in Aizawl

Aizawl, March 16 (UNI) The three-day Lemchan – Mizoram Film Festival 2026 commenced on Sunday in Aizawl, marking the first time such a festival has been organised in the state through the joint initiative of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (I&PR), Government of Mizoram.
The inaugural programme was held at the Mini Theatre, Lianchhiari Run, located within the I&PR Office complex at Treasury Square, where the festival was formally inaugurated by Mizoram Information, Public Relations, Printing and Stationery Minister B. Lalchhanzova.
Addressing the gathering, Lalchhanzova expressed happiness at the launch of the first Mizoram Film Festival and said the state is home to many talented and creative individuals. He noted that the festival would serve as an important platform for local filmmakers to showcase their work and bring Mizo stories to a wider audience.
The minister also emphasised the need for stronger collaboration with other regions in the field of filmmaking and said such initiatives would contribute to the development of the film industry in Mizoram. He added that cinema is a powerful medium of storytelling that not only entertains and educates audiences but also creates livelihood opportunities for young people.
Lalchhanzova conveyed his best wishes for the success of the festival and hoped that filmmakers, artists and participants would find the event both enriching and enjoyable.
Betsy Zothanpari Sailo, Secretary of the IPRP&S Department, delivered the welcome address and commended the Directorate of Information and Public Relations for taking the initiative to organise the festival. She also thanked film experts from different parts of India for attending the event and sharing their knowledge and experience.
Renowned film and theatre personality Lilette Dubey also spoke at the programme. She expressed her happiness at being invited to Mizoram for the festival and remarked that cinema and music continue to hold value across generations, serving as powerful forces that connect people from different cultures and languages.
Gouri Nair, Head of Domestic Film Festival at the National Film Development Corporation, also addressed the gathering and expressed hope that the event would become an important catalyst for the growth of the film industry in Mizoram and the wider North-East region.
The Lemchan – Mizoram Film Festival is being held at the I&PR Office complex at Treasury Square from March 16 to 18. The three-day event will feature a series of learning sessions with film experts, as well as screenings of selected films from various states across India, along with Mizo films.
Film professionals from different parts of the country have also been invited to participate in the festival, which organisers hope will encourage greater interaction, learning and collaboration within the filmmaking community. UNI ZS NST SSP
